Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I'm pregnant and due in May. I want to take the rest of the year off. I've only worked in the district for a year. How much time can I have off in the fall?

A: You are typically allotted 6-8 weeks of maternity leave (up to your doctor). During this time you will use your accumulated sick days. If you run out, you may use the sick bank if you are a member. This will take you to summer. You are also able to take up to 12 weeks of FMLA (Family Medical Leave Ac)t once school starts up in the fall. This is unpaid leave, but with health benefits. Since you are not getting paid (no deductions possible), you must pay the district your share of the benefits cost.

A: First of all, you need to inform the BEA treasurer that you will be taking an unpaid leave of absence. It will be his/her responsibility to let NEA/NH know to remove you from the roster.
