Grade 8
Welcome to 2012! We hope you all had an enjoyable break.
It’s already January in my eighth grade year at BMS. I guess I’m glad that high school is still a long way off. Or is it? I’m hearing about upcoming grade 8 events that signal we’re getting closer to the end of the year. That gives me a tingle in my stomach—kind of a mix of being excited and scared at the same time.
As we finish first semester, the teachers are talking about the midterms that the students will be taking at the end of this month. Exams for Integrated Algebra, Spanish I and French I will be administered on January 25 & 26, respectively from 12:00-2:00 p.m. There will also be a science midterm that will take place the week or so following math and language exams. Mrs. George will be providing more information in her classes.
Sargent Center is approaching quickly! We are going the week of May 21-25, 2012. Bills will be sent home with the second quarter report cards, and all registration and health forms will be available online at the beginning of February. If you are in need of a scholarship, please email or send in a note to your child’s homeroom teacher. If you can volunteer for any amount of time that week, please email Mrs. Arndt with your specific availability.
There is an informational meeting for parents only on Thursday, February 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the Airport Cinema at BMS. Larry Chambers, the school program director for Nature’s Classroom, will be here to speak about the program for your children. He will be giving the students their own presentation earlier that same day.
High school seems to be lurking around the corner. We just filled out a survey for Career Day, which will be held on March 9. A sure sign that eventually we will be freshmen is choosing our courses for high school, and we’re doing that early next month! Yearbook kids are even taking pictures of us waving goodbye for the last page of our yearbook! Tryouts have started for the Talent Show to be held on February 23.
Congratulations to the grade 8 students who made it to the school-wide bees in both geography and spelling. For the Geography Bee: Owen Molind, Aubrey Taylor, and the alternate Robbie Loomis. For the Spelling Bee: Aditya Shah, our 2012 Ives Spelling Bee Champion, Margaret (Maggie) Jensen, Albert Gunnison, and alternate Claire Murray.
As a reminder, it is fairly cold in the building. Please be sure your children are coming to school dressed appropriately for the outdoor temperature.
This year really is going by fast. It’s as if the older we get, the faster the years go by. I want to be a freshman, but not quite yet. Besides, maybe snow is coming, and I want to go sledding. Snow day tomorrow?
As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, you can reach us at grade8@bownet.org.
