REACH

The BMS Invention Convention will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2012.  Any student in grades 5-8 choosing to participate will have the option to develop an original idea for an invention and build a model of it or to build a Rube Goldberg Machine. This year the invention challenge option is “Winter in New England,” for which students may invent something that will get them through the long, cold winter; i.e., a winter activity, new clothing, winter safety. Grade-level winners in each of the three categories will go on to the State Invention Convention on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Merrimack Valley High School in Penacook. Volunteers are needed for judging and set-up.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Christy Romano atcromano@bownet.org or call 225-3212 ext. 416.

The BMS mentoring program continues with new mentorships in math, science, LEGO building, the stock market, equine studies, bridge, and NH history. Rob Kramer is working with a group of 5th grade students on advanced math topics, as well as exploring science topics with a group of 6th graders.  Another group of 6th graders is enjoying various math activities with Liz Rogers, a college student. Ana Teresa Mullen is mentoring twelve 5th graders who are building and creating with LEGOS. Seventh grade students have the opportunity to learn about stocks and the stock market with Derrick Wong as their mentor.  Each student in the group is creating his own mock stock portfolio. Joan Cook is teaching the game of bridge to eight 8th graders. Another group of 8th graders is learning and discussing New Hampshire history with Mr. Spofford.  A group of 6th grade students, along with mentor Karen McGee, is sharing their love of horses and equine experiences, as well as fundraising for local horse farms. The 7th and 8th grade Art Club, mentored by Chris O’Brien, enjoyed its visit to the Hood Art Museum at Dartmouth College. We also have Bow Memorial School students assisting in classes at Bow Elementary School. We are very fortunate to have these talented mentors, and we appreciate all their time, dedication, and expertise. We welcome anyone who would like to share his/her interests with middle school students.

The literary magazine, BMS Expressions, is back!  We are looking for students in all grades to submit any of their writing (short stories, poems, essays, and narratives), drawings or illustrations, or photographs by March 30, 2012.  Please submit your piece along with the BMS Expressions form to Mrs. Romano (REACH) or to your LA teacher.

Our four Destination ImagiNation teams are working diligently on their challenges for the regional competition on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Kearsage High School in Sutton, NH. Many thanks to our coaches Julie Day, Mike Garfield, Alison Hrinchuk, Greg Clark, and Jackie Coe for their time, hard work, and effort.

If you are interested in volunteering for any of these programs or would like more information, please contact Christy Romano at cromano@bownet.org or call 225-3212 ext. 416.
