Look for Details:

1.  Michael's class is hatching baby chicks.  It takes 21 days for a chick to hatch.  When the chicks hatch they will be moved to a brooder.   Michael's class is on day 15.  How many more days will Michael's class have to wait for their chicks to hatch?

2.  Jenny's class has been candling their eggs each day.  They have been watching their chick embryos develop.  They began with 25 eggs in all.  On Monday, 23 eggs displayed signs of growth.  On Wednesday, 20 eggs continued to display signs of growth.  On Friday, Jenny's teacher disposed of the eggs that were not developing.  How many eggs did Jenny's teacher dispose of?  Make a prediction about how many eggs will hatch in all.

Draw a Picture:

1.  Mrs. Brenlove's class has a baby chick that is growing very quickly.  On Monday, one of their baby chicks was born about 7 centimeters long.  Each day the chick grows about 2 centimeters.  How many centimeters will the chick grow in six days?  Draw a picture showing the baby chick on Monday Wednesday and Saturday.  (This chick will be entered in the Guinness Book of World Records!)

2.  Mrs. Brewster's class hatched 13 baby chicks.  Each baby chick has three toes on each foot.  How many chick toes are in Mrs. Brewster's class?

Act it Out/Use Manipulatives:

1.  There are 7 second grade classrooms that will be hatching chicks this year.  We will be getting 105 eggs from UNH to hatch into chicks.  Use your counters to determine how many eggs each classroom will receive.

2.  Mrs. Hamer picked up 28 grams of mash to feed the chicks.   If there are 7 second grade classrooms with chicks, how many grams of mash will each classroom receive?

Construct a Table or Graph:

1.  Students in Mrs. Hamer’s room counted chicks that hatched in their incubator. On Monday 3 hatched, on Tuesday 4, on Wednesday 3, and on Thursday 1.

Please graph this information.

2.  Students in Ms. Ambra’s room counted the colors of chicks hatched in each room and then           totaled each color. Overall there were 12 yellow, 8 brown speckled, and 10 black speckled.

Please put this information on a table.

Guess and Check:

1.    Mrs. Stanley’s class bought mash for the chicks in four classrooms. The mash cost 3 dollars.  How much would each classroom have to give to pay for the mash?

2.  Mrs. Brenlove’s class bought mash for the chicks in three classrooms. The mash cost $2.70. How much would each classroom have to give to pay for the mash?

Find a pattern:

1.The newly hatched chicks in Mrs. Barton's room were getting hungry. On Tuesday they ate 3 grams of mash, on Wednesday 6 grams of mash, and on Thursday they ate 12 grams of mash. If this pattern continues, how many grams of mash will they eat on Thursday?
*Challenge: How many will they eat on Friday?

2. Mrs. Gerhardt's class is counting birds returning in the spring. In March, they count 20, in April 40, and in May 80. How many might they count in June if this pattern continues?

Work Backwards:

1.  At the beginning of the Chick unit Mrs. Brewster put 12 eggs in the incubator. On the 21st day of incubation there were 4 eggs in the incubator. How many eggs had hatched?

2.  Jenny had a sparrow’s nest in the tree outside in her back yard. On Monday there were 4 eggs in the nest. On Friday there was only 1 egg left in the nest. How many eggs hatched between Monday and Friday?

Simplify or Break into Smaller Parts:

1.  Mrs. Stanley’s class set up the incubator on Monday to test the temperature before putting the eggs in on Friday. The temperature on Tuesday was 87 degrees. The temperature on Wednesday was 89 degrees. The temperature on Thursday was 94 degrees. How many more degrees must the temperature rise before it reaches 100 degrees.

2.  Mrs. Barton’s class hatched 12 chicks. Each chick ate 2 ounces of mash. Each chick drank 1 ounce of water. How many ounces of mash was eaten by all of the chicks.

Write A Number Sentence:

1.  11 chicks hatched in Mrs. Brewster’s room and 9 hatched in Mrs. Stanley’s room. How many hatched in all?

2.  The second graders hatched 35 chicks this year. On Thursday 21 were picked up by a farmer. Friday a different farmer will pick up the rest. How many will she pick up?
