1. Joey and his class have decided to create a model of a tide pool. In their tide pool they will include 18 different tide pool animals. Tide pools are located on the coast or shore. They have created 5 crabs, 6 sea stars and 3 sea anemones. How many more tide pool animals will need to be created?
2. Amanda brought 78 seashells to school one day. There are 7 second grade classrooms. She donated 10 to seashells to each classroom. Seashells come in many different shapes and sizes. How many seashells will Amanda have left for herself?
1. Mrs. Hamer's class divided their school of fish into thirds. They had 27 fish in all. 1/3 of the fish were red, 1/3 of the fish were blue and 1/3 of the fish were yellow. Draw a picture to show this information. How many red fish are there? How many yellow and blue fish are there together?
2. 7 sharks are swimming in the sea. Each one has ten enormous teeth. How many teeth can we see? One shark looses 6 teeth. Now how many teeth can we see?
Act it Out/ Use Manipulatives:
1. The second graders are going on a class trip to Odiorne Point to learn about Tide Pools. They will be leaving at 8:00am. It will take an hour and a half to get to the park. When they get to the park, the students will be visiting the museum and working in tide pools for two hours. Is it reasonable to think the students could eat lunch at 12:00? Explain your answer. What time should the students prepare to leave the park to be back at school by 2:00pm? Use your mini-clocks to help you calculate your times and schedules.
2. The Staff from Odiorne Point just called and is looking for some students to help them create a tide pool in a new location. Our job would be to help relocate rocks for the tide pool. There are 100 rocks to be moved. Mrs. Stanley's class of 20 students have been selected to help with this project. How many rocks will each student need to move to finish the project? Use manipulatives to help you decide.
Construct a Table or Graph:1. On the field trip to Odiorne, Stephens group counted the animals they identified. Here is their list:
2. Students in Mrs. Brenloves class voted on their favorite whales.
Make a table to display this information.
3. In one tidal pool a group of students found these sea animals.
1 crab, 28 periwinkles, 2 moonsnails, 1 sponge, 5 limpets, and 1 seastar.
Create a graph so that these students can use it for their presentation.
2. Choose a science book in your classroom. Guess how many centimeters long it is. Then check.
1. Mrs. Hamer's class counted the fishing boats as they went out to sea. At 9:00 am there were 5 boats, at 10:00 am there were 7, and at 11:00 am there were 9. If this pattern continues, how many will there be at 1:00 pm? 2. A lobsterman in Portsmouth was busy bringing in his catch. In February he brought in 100 pounds, in March 150 pounds, and in April 200 pounds. If this pattern continues, how many pounds will he get in May?1. Kim spent 5 hours at Odiorne Point visiting the museum, eating lunch and exploring the tide pool. She visited the museum for 2 hours and ate lunch at a picnic table for 30 minutes. She spent the rest of the time at the Rocky Shore. How much time did Kim spend at the Rocky Shore?
2. Ben identified many different animals at the Odiorne Point Rocky Shore. 1/3 of the animals that he identified were green. 1/2 of the animals that he identified were brown. The rest of the animals were white. How many of the animals were green? How many of the animals were brown?
Simplify or Break into Smaller Parts
1. Mrs. Brenlove brought a seashell into her classroom on Monday. She teaches in room 104. 1/2 of Mrs. Brenloves class got to see the seashell on Monday. 1/4 of the class got to see the seashell on Tuesday. 1/4 of the class got to see the seashell on Wednesday. There are 20 students in Mrs. Brenloves class. How many students got to see the seashell on Monday?
2. 4 of the second grade classes from Bow Elementary School went to the ocean on October 12th and 3 of the second grade classes from Bow Elementary School went to the ocean on October 14th. There were 7second grade classes at Bow Elementary School. Write the fraction that represents the number of second grade classes that went to the ocean on October 14th.
1. Mrs. Barton's class counted 18 moonsnails on their trip to the ocean. Mrs. Stanley's class counted 14. How many did they count in all?
2. Mrs. Brenlove's class found 16 crabs in tide pools at Odiorne. Mrs. Ambra's class found 9. How many more did Mrs. Brenlove's class find?
