Helpful hints to enhance your child's
Pre-Reading and Reading Skills

*First and Foremost*
Reading and writing skills tend to develop independently, but to be a strong reader, as well as a strong writer, it is important to show the child the connection between the two.
When you read aloud to your child use your finger to follow the text. This will draw his or her attention to the words on the page showing that books contain a message. This will also help with left to right progression.
As your child is learning the letters of the alphabet have him or her locate some of them on a page that doesn't have a lot of text. As the year moves on when I start to introduce high frequency words (i.e. the, go, see, I, like, a, can) you can have him or her start to locate them in a text. Also ask questions about the pictures and talk about what might happen next.
Later in the year you will be able to help by making connections to their writing. When they are practicing letters reinforce the sound the letter makes.
Read with them daily.
